Deciding where to stay in Franz Josef on your South Island road trip? Rainforest Retreat offers tree houses, lodges, motel rooms and powered campervan sites surrounded by native rainforest, right in Franz Josef village. With accommodation for couples, families, friends and campervan travellers, you can choose a stay that suits your route, budget and travel style.
Spend your days exploring Glacier Country, then return to a comfortable bed, dinner at Monsoon or a private spa pool if you’ve booked one of our spa accommodation options.
Why stay in Franz Josef village?
When your road trip already involves plenty of driving, staying in the village makes your evenings easier. You can head out for a meal, explore the township and return to your accommodation without another long journey.
Rainforest Retreat is at 46 Cron Street, in the heart of Franz Josef village on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Native trees and ferns surround the accommodation, giving you a rainforest setting with the convenience of a village location.
It’s a base for exploring the wider area, too. Plan time for the glacier valley, rainforest walks, Lake Mapourika and nearby coastal experiences, rather than treating Franz Josef as a quick overnight stop.

Choose accommodation to suit your South Island road trip
A couple travelling by car will have different priorities to a family or friends exploring in a campervan. At Rainforest Retreat, you can choose your accommodation around how you want to spend your time.
Tree houses and lodges for a special stay
If you’d like to make your accommodation part of the experience, explore our Retreat Deluxe accommodation.
Our Deluxe Tree Huts and Deluxe Tree Lodges offer private accommodation among native bush. For more space and a private outdoor spa pool, consider a Deluxe Spa Tree House.
After several days on the road, having somewhere comfortable to enjoy a slower evening can be just as appealing as the next adventure.

Private spa accommodation for couples
For a couples’ stay in Franz Josef, our Canopy Spa Tree Lodges combine a rainforest setting with a private spa pool on the deck.
Each studio lodge has a king bed, ensuite bathroom, kitchenette and Nespresso machine. Make a coffee before heading out for the day, then return for an evening in your own space among the trees.

Motel rooms for a practical road trip base
Our Studio Motel Rooms offer a bathroom, kitchenette and flexible bedding configurations.
They’re a useful option if you want straightforward, comfortable accommodation between days of exploring. A kitchenette gives you the flexibility to prepare something simple before getting back on the road.
Check the bedding configuration and guest capacity for your selected room when booking.
Accommodation for families and groups
Travelling together is easier when your accommodation gives everyone enough space.
Rainforest Retreat offers several multi-bedroom options, including Gecko House and larger holiday houses. Depending on the property you choose, you can have separate bedrooms and shared spaces for meals and time together.
Compare the individual accommodation options for bedroom layouts, cooking facilities and guest numbers before booking.
Powered campervan sites among the rainforest
If your South Island road trip is taking place in a campervan, Rainforest Holiday Park has powered sites in a native rainforest setting.
Guest facilities include a communal kitchen, laundry facilities and a BBQ area. You also have Monsoon Restaurant & Bar onsite for evenings when you’d prefer someone else to do the cooking.

Dinner at Monsoon, right onsite
After a day of driving or exploring, an easy dinner option is welcome.
Monsoon Restaurant & Bar is onsite at Rainforest Retreat, so you can settle into your accommodation before heading over for a meal and a drink.
It’s another reason to leave some space in your itinerary for an evening here, rather than arriving late and departing first thing.
How many nights should you stay in Franz Josef?
We recommend at least two nights for most road trip visitors. This gives you a full day between arriving and departing.
Three nights allows more time for local experiences and greater flexibility around weather-dependent activities such as scenic helicopter flights and glacier heli-hikes. Extra time gives you more opportunities to reschedule, although suitable conditions are never guaranteed.
Read our guide to spending one, two or three nights in Franz Josef for itinerary ideas.
Planning a spring or summer stay?
If you’re organising your road trip in November or travelling over summer, book ahead if you have a particular accommodation type in mind.
Start by deciding what matters most for your stay: a private spa pool, separate bedrooms, a kitchenette or a powered campervan site. Then check availability for the option that suits your group.
Before confirming, review the facilities, bedding and booking conditions for your selected accommodation.
